a registered association for architecture and monument protection
In 2004, the vocational school of the Bergstraße district was named after prof. Heinrich Metzendorf, architect in Bensheim. On the occasion of getting a new name for the school, the construction department at the HMS decided to look more intensively at the biography and the numerous buildings of the builder of the Bergstraße to give students and teachers at HMS a better understanding of that building tradition. Since then, many lectures, guided tours and study trips around the subject in HMS have taken place. The increasing public interest for Metzendorf and his buildings has led to the foundation of the non-profit Metzendorf Association for Architecture and Monument Protection (e.V.)
The founding members are teachers of the construction department at HMS and citizens from Bensheim and the Bergstraße region. Chairman of the association is Frank Oppermann, professor for construction history at the University of Darmstadt (h-da), member of the monument council of Hessen and former first “city historian of Bensheim”.
The aim of the Metzendorf Association is to campaign actively for the maintenance, preservation and exploration of the left architectural-artistic complete works of the Bergstraßian brothers Heinrich and Georg Metzendorf. In doing so, the association wants create awareness among a wide public for the meaning of the cultural heritage of the brothers Metzendorf, especially also among the younger generation. By the cooperation between Heinrich Metzendorf School and Metzendorf Association, numerous school projects could get supported, as for example the “monument/think active” project.
Organisation and realisation of public presentations, study trips to the architecture of the Metzendorf brothers and the architecture of their productive years are main part of the activities of the association. It has only non-profit purposes with the aim to support the cultural awareness of the public for architecture and monument protection.
